Caribou Sells 100% Sustainable Coffee |
|
Brooklyn Center based Caribou Coffee claims to be America's first major coffee retailer to source all of its beans from farms that meet sustainable standards developed by the Rainforest Alliance.
Caribou Coffee Company confirmed that all of its coffee and espresso beans are now sustainably sourced from farms certified by the Rainforest Alliance. According to Brooklyn Center-based Caribou, it is the first major coffee retailer in the country to reach this sustainability level. Rainforest Alliance certification is managed by the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN), a team of nonprofit conservation groups. The SAN sets standards to guide farms in sustainable agriculture practices, including water conservation, protecting wildlife, and minimal chemical use. It also ensures that workers receive reasonable wages and working conditions. In April 2010, the company announced its goal to source 100 percent of its beans from alliance-certified farms by the end of 2011. Caribou said it began buying Rainforest Alliance-certified coffee in 2003. “Reaching 100 percent certification is a significant accomplishment for Caribou Coffee,” Chad Trewick, Caribou’s senior director of coffee and tea, said in a statement. “I’ve seen how communities thrive from working with the Rainforest Alliance, and I’m proud to say that all of our beans come from sustainable, healthy sources.”
Caribou Coffee Company is among Minnesota’s 60-largest public companies based on revenue, which totaled $284 million in 2010.
